Microsoft announced their AI model Copilot this week revolutionising the way that we can work.
Salivating at the thought of removing tedious tasks from my day to day life, allowing me to focus on the good stuff of marketing, it is mind-blowing how far AI has come, even from the announcement of ChatGPT-3 in November 2022.
Now with Copilot being announced, it's demonstrated it can summarise email chains, create an entire proposal based off existing documents, summarise lists of data and turn them into digestible graphs and charts, and then use those charts to form a PowerPoint.
All of which can be done with about...6 sentences to Copilot.
If you're office-based, the thought of this is borderline orgasmic.
As a digital marketer, I spend my life pitching ideas, presenting data, emailing, video calling, so the thought of being able to optimise my workflow is something I am looking forward too.
The Danger of AI
However, the more I thought about it, the more I thought how dangerous it can be for the quality of work that will happen.
Think about it, you can have AI generate an email for you based off of the summarised email chain that AI has also done for you.
You now lose the human side of things. The pleases, thank yous, the smiley faces.
Yes, your time has 100% been saved, and yes, if you want to get the job done then this 1000% allows you to focus on the more important things
But for me, the foundation of relationship is formed off of good communication. If I don't understand how someone communicates, then the relationship already has a certain ceiling.
When creating a PowerPoint full of data that has been generated automatically through work, it means that you've got an entire PowerPoint full of data that you may not be able to explain if you don't understand the context.
How do we move forward?
I think the attitude towards AI (minus the entire 'AI Robots taking over the world' view) should be one that has both intrigue and caution.
This is such a powerful tool that we can leverage to increase workflow and produce high quality work.
But this is just the first step on the AI revolution.
I've seen videos of robots dancing, doing parkour, flipping and whatever it is.
Now if you combine the intelligence of Copilot with the ability of these robots, now we're on a journey to an awful Hollywood apocalyptic doomsday robot revolution film.
And whilst I can currently do 10 push ups, I don't think thats going to fare against a robot-humanoid who's bursting through walls whilst quoting Aristotle.
Let's embrace the new technology that will be on us, but we also need to be aware of where the line is. Because once that line is crossed, we won't be able to go back.
